Designer Emulation Kits DEKs are tributes to some of the all-time great industrial designers. Use the kit to make your own design classic. Assemble, attach a 9-volt battery, and enjoy!
The project was actually started as a joke...an amusing paean to Mark's mentor and former employer, lighting designer Ingo Maurer. However, it quickly expanded, taking on a life of its own and obtaining coverage in magazines and blogs. Eventually, the DEKs established the manufacturing component of mmckenna.
The DEKs are made of printed circuit board PCB, and while the circuitry is quite simple, the CNC milling operations are quite ambitious. We pushed our vendors to hold tolerances down to .002 inches, about the thickness of a human hair.
The lamps and designers emulated are represented in countless design tomes. We revere these designers and their work, but they also present us with challenges. Designers constantly pressure themselves to measure up, but each individual must find his or her own voice. With any luck, DEKs will help everyone lighten up along this journey.
DEK 1 is the series' flagship design, inspired by Ingo Maurer's Lucellino.
DEK 2 is based on the classic Arco by Achille Castiglioni. A universally recognized symbol of good taste, it simply had to be included in the series.
DEK 3 takes the form of the famous Tizio by Richard Sapper. This is the most challenging DEK to put together...for the advanced DEK collector.
DEK 4 is modeled after Castiglioni's Toio. It is the second Castiglioni lamp to be emulated, further proof of his extraordinary genius.
DEK 5 emulates Philippe Starck's Miss K. This is the first DEK to have a shade, creating a diffused light, just like Starck's design.
